やはり彼(ブレイディ)が引退したままなら、バックスはトレードで獲得できる他のベテランQBに意識を向けることになるだろう。

via free agency:フリーエージェント(の市場)から

※Shouldは文頭で「万が一~したら」の意味。「If he sould remain retired」から、Ifを省略してshouldを文頭に出した形です。

※ブレイディはその後引退の意向を撤回しました。

イアン・ラポポートが日曜に伝えたところによれば、ラムズとスタフォードの代理人は、シーズン終了後に契約延長について同意を目指すことになる。


hammer out :〔ハンマーで金属を〕たたいて形を作る[伸ばす・ならす]/〔長い議論の後で結論などに〕同意する、決着する
extension:拡張、延長

フットボールは驚くほど複雑なスポーツだが、様々なニュアンスをあえて除外して考えれば、試合に勝つために重要なのは、ヤードをゲインして、点を取り、スティックを動かし、ターンオーバーを避けることだ。

come down to:結局~ということになる
move the sticks:(ファーストダウンを更新して)、スティックを動かす

概して、バロウはより早く、より多くのスナップでプレッシャーにさらされている。オフェンスとしては、安定して克服するのが難しい問題だ。

⑤I expect Burrow to have a better career overall because his strength (accuracy) is usually stable long-term, while his weakness (taking too many sacks) usually improves with experience.

総合的に言って、バロウの方がいいキャリアを送ると予想する。なぜならば彼の長所(正確さ)は長期的に維持できるものだし、一方で彼の短所(被サックの多さ)は、経験により改善しうるものだからだ。

2015シーズン終了後にペイトン・マニングが引退して以来、デンバーはQBに苦しんできた。答えの出ないまま、QBを交換し続けていた。

 

purgatory:[しばしば P~]〔カトリック〕煉獄/《一時的な》苦難, 懲罰, 苦行
signal-caller:シグナル・コーラー。要するにQBのこと。


⑦Wilson had an up-and-down 2021 campaign. He started hot, then a finger injury caused him to miss the first games of his career, and he wasn't the same immediately after returning.

ウィルソンの2021シーズンは浮き沈みがあった。序盤は好調だったが、指のケガによりキャリアではじめて試合を欠場した。ケガから戻ってすぐには、それ以前と同じ彼ではなかった。

cause (人) to do:(人)に~させる、~させる原因となる。

しかし、シーズン終盤で彼は再び好調に戻り、彼の問題は何らかの衰えというよりはケガの影響が大きかったことを示した。


down the stretch:終盤の勝負どころ(※シーズン終盤以外にも、ゲームの4Qにも使います。競馬のホームストレッチ(最終コーナーからゴールまでの直線)が語源です


⑨Seattle didn't plan on moving Wilson unless they got a transformative package in return. The Broncos made an offer they couldn't refuse.

トレードの対価がチームを変えうる内容でない限り、シアトルはウィルソンを出すつもりはなかった。しかし、ブロンコスは拒否できないオファーを出した。

 

transformative:変化を呼ぶ。(重要な方法を通じて、誰かの人生をそれまでと違うものに、いいものに変える原因となる)
a transformative experience (自分を変える経験) 
the transformative power of love(愛という、人生を変える力)


⑩The Broncos had a playoff-ready roster outside of the quarterback. Now they have that Super Bowl champ to compete with the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert and Derek Carr in a loaded AFC West.

ブロンコスは、QBを除けばプレーオフに値するロースターを擁していた。そして今や、スーパーボウル王者のQBを加え、パトリック・マホームズ、ジャスティン・ハーバート、デレク・カーによってぎゅうぎゅうに混み合ったAFC西地区と戦うことになる。


the likes of:同種の、同類の
loaded:荷を積んだ、弾丸が装填された、
a loaded suitcase:いっぱいに詰めたスーツケース.
a loaded bus:満員バス
