NFL英単語帳⑤（トム・ブレイディ、Top 100 Players of 2018編）

NFLについての動画を教材にして、NFLファンが楽しみながら英語を鍛えよう、という主旨のページです。

今回は、「Top 100 Players of 2018」の１位、トム・ブレイディの動画から、NFLのスター選手たちのコメントを例文として取り上げました。

「訳文を見て意味を理解→単語リストで復習→動画を見てリスニング練習」というサイクルを繰り返してみてください。

【例文】

★をつけた文が、動画からの引用です。各選手がブレイディについて語った部分を取り上げました。2018年シーズン前に出たものなので、選手たちが語っているのは主に2017/18シーズンについてです。後半取り上げられている試合は、AFCチャンピオンシップのペイトリオッツ対ジャガーズ戦です。

hater　ヘイター、アンチ
※「憎む人」という元々の意味に加えて、「嫉妬する人」「嫌うために嫌う人」というニュアンスがあるようです。
hater＝A person that simply cannot be happy for another person's success. So rather than be happy they make a point of exposing a flaw in that person. (Urban Dictionaryより転記。「単に、他人の成功を喜べない人。むしろ成功した人の欠点を指摘して喜んでいる人」と。)

（※アメフトの記事などで出てくる時には、「選手としての生産高≒スタッツ、ゲームへの影響力」のような意味で解釈すれば近いと思います）

（※statsと略した形でよく出てきます）

revolving door　回転ドア
miss a beat　動揺する、驚く
supporting cast　助演、脇役

off-schedule　スケジュールに遅れて（スケジュールどおりに、はon schedule)（※ここでは、「デザインしたプレーができずに」という意味だと思われます）

hang in　くじけまいとする、頑張る、粘る
mobility　動きやすさ、可動性、流動性、機動力

extend　（手足を）伸ばす、（期間を）延ばす
（※アメフトでは、主にQBがサックされずに時間を稼ぐこと。レシーバーがフリーになる時間を作れるかがプレーの成否を分けるので、よく出てくる動詞です）

Russell Wilson　ラッセル・ウィルソン

★(4:23～)The thing about Tom is he’s super clutch. You know, he is... He’s on time.

トムについて言えば、彼は特別に「クラッチ」なんだ。彼は･･･彼はきっちり勝負を決める。

（※NFLを含めスポーツでよく出てくる単語です。勝敗を分ける最終盤の時間帯、そのプレー、そのプレーを決める選手、など。上の発言は「ものすごく勝負強いんだ」などとも訳せると思います）

on time　時間どおりの、期限に間に合う

勝負が懸かる場面でも、恐れることはない。

definitely　確かに、絶対に、明確に

※runには「途切れずに続くこと」という意味があるので、 Maybe gave him a runは「連続での１位を与えることになる」という意味で、「誰か他の選手に投票したい気持ちもあるけど、実力を見せたんだから仕方がない」ということを言いたいと解釈しました。ブレイディは2017の「Top100」でも１位でした。
